We are currently talking about how children get into trouble, the consequences they suffer as a result, and how to avoid trouble. We are reading
We Beat the Street:
How a Friendship Pact Led to Success
by The Three Doctors from Newark, NJ. Below are our reactions per chapter.
Chapter 1: "You Don't Have to Cut My Foot off, Do You?"
Hanging Tough: A Conversation with Doctor Sampson Davis
I would like to write about the part when he was trying to be like his brother and his friend.and it remined me of when I used to try to act like my big sister.
I like the part when he broke his foot and the reason why I like the part is because I would like a cast.
9/24/2009 V. F
I LIKED THE PART WHEN HE GOT TO STAY IN BED AND NOT DO WORK.
I liked the part when he didnt cry at first when the rock fell on his foot.
Chapter 2: "Oh, Man, You're in Trouble Again!"
School Problems: A Conversation with Doctor Rameck Hunt
The part I liked the most was when he was explaining to the principal why he had got sent there.
I liked the part when he had the fight with "MEAT BALL".
I like the part when he learned his lesson because you don't always have to fight to solve your problems.
Chapter 3: "Isn't that School in the Ghetto?"
Influential Teachers: A Conversation with Doctor George Jenkins
This chapter reminds me of
Yes We Can,
a Barack Obama book, because in Ms. Reid’s class we were reading about how Barack’s father was a trouble maker when he was young but he was a smart boy. He did his test and he got good grades. When he didn’t have money for college the college said they would take care of it.
I like the part when the lady said something nice about his sweater. This reminds me of when the people in my school say nice things about me.
George should finish college because my Mom and Dad did not.
Chapter 4: "We're Gonna Jack Us Some ICEES from Jacks!"
Temptation and its Consequences: A Conversation with Doctor Sampson Davis
What I think about the story was that they wERE going to get eatEn ALIVE BY the dogs . I was pretty worried about them .
I liked when they stole the icy drink. I will never steal anything. I thought that they were going to be eaten by the dogs.
Z.A. 10/9/09 I think that the two boys were wrong for stealing and that they deserve what happened to them.
Chapter 5: "How Much Do You Need?"
Dreams and Missed Opportunities: A Conversation with Doctor Rameck Hunt
I THINK THAT HE SHOULD HAVE GONE TO THE STORE AND GOT MORE THAN ONE COOLER AND BRING IT TO HIS HOUSE AND PUT THE FOOD IN THE COOLER AND ASK HIS GRANDMA, “HOW DO YOU TURN THE LIGHTS BACK ON?”
I think that Dr. Rameck should have given the mother $2.50 to buy milk and when he went to school he could have asked his teacher for $2.50 to be famous like a star. He could have also asked his grandma for two fifty. I also want to know, did his grandma find out about the incident?
I think Rameck should have said, "Mom, I can't. I need the money."
If I was Rameck I would have called the grandmother. I would have asked her whether I should give the money to my mother to pay for the lights. Iwould pay for milk and for the lights, too. And if I just had a hundred dollar bill left I would tell the picture people I had to pay for my little sister's milk. The picture people might have said, "yes." I would not have given the money to the mother.
I think the son should have said, "Mom, you don't need this." I would go to the store and buy a little bit of milk, otherwise go next door and put the food in the neighbor's refrigerator.
I think he should get extra help from his grandma.
Chapter 6: "Are You Godzilla or King Kong?"
The Beginning of a Dream: A Conversation with Dr. George Jenkins
I had a dream that I had a job a car and a house and my job was to be a very good teacher and help my class learn a lot. I am comparing this to the chapter of ‘ARE YOU GODZILLA OR KING KONG.’
My dream for the chapter of “Are You Godzilla or King Kong” is that I want to be a singer, dancer ,ballet dancer and an actor. Because when I was 4 or 8 I loved to sing and dance and be a ballet dancer and actor. I love to act because I already acted in 4 plays. I played Annie before because I have red hair. People think that I dyed my hair but I didn’t. That’s why I love my dream for when I grow up.
K.B. and A.E.
One day I had dream I was getting shot but I ran in the store. My grandmother was in the store and my grandma saved me. One day I dream I was dying, but I went to my mother’s room. Then I woke up.
Chapter 7: "Yeah, Man. They Say the Driver's Dead."
Living and Dying on the Streets: A Conversation with Dr. Sampson Davis
S B 11/4/09
My reaction to the chapter is that if someone asked you if you want to get in a company and you’re not comfortable you should not do it. Also the reason why I would not do it is because you do not know if the person is being a true person. When you are a close person to somebody they always or sometimes turn on you.
V.F NOVEMBER 9, 2009
I THINK THAT IS NOT A GOOD THING TO DO. WHEN PEOPLE STEAL THINGS BECAUSE BAD THINGS CAN HAPPEN. JUST LIKE IN THE BOOK.
E.C. (5) 11-9-09
My reaction to the story was that it reminds me of this little teenager that stole a car from a lady. The lady had a baby in the back seat of the car. The teenager crashed into the wall. The baby fell out of the window and he ran over his hand.
Zm ct November 9, 2009
I think that the little boy shouldn’t have stolen the car. That’s why RAZOR died. Sam shouldn’t listen to that man and gotten the carpet cleaner. That’s why he had to go to jail. RAZOR was getting chased by the police and he whipped around a corner and crashed the car. REGGIE was a kung fu teacher and he taught Andre and Sam how to fight like a kung fu master.
Chapter 8: "I Don't Even Know Anybody Who Went To College."
Entering Seventh Grade: A Conversation with Doctor George Jenkins
Making Good Grades: A Conversation with Doctor Sampson Davis
The chapter reminded me of when my big brother was so smart that he had to go to college .Then he really didn’t want to go then he did want to go. He did that just like on chapter.
I think he did not want to go to that school because he liked the school he went to. If I was to go to a school I liked I would not have gone to university either. This happeened to me because I did not want to Rising Star but my mom told me your are going. When my mother and father took me there because I was a baby so they told me to go wash my hands and when I went they left. When I came back they where gone and I started to cry, "I WANT MY MOMMY!" The teacher said that she left. Then I started to cry even more. So then the teacher called my mother and she came and got me. That was the happiest day of my life because I did not have to go to that school. Some of my family members say i'm spoiled because of that.
I think he did not want to go to another school because he had lots of friends over at the school where he was. This happened to me before because I had to go to another school.
I think that it was wrong when Tito asked to see the other boy's report card. Maybe because it was none of his buisness to look at some one else things.
ZM NOVEMBER 24, 2009
I THINK THAT SAMPSON IS VERY MAD BECAUSE HE HAD TO GO TO ANOTHER SCHOOL. HE DID NOT WANT TO BECAUSE ALL HIS FRIENDS WERE AT THE OTHER. I DO AGREE WITH HIS MOM. SAMPSON IS NOT GOING TO TELL his friends because he does not want them to get upset. I think he is going to lie to his mom. If he tells his buddies they are going to beg Sampson's mom to let him stay in the school where he already goes.
I agree with SAMPSON'S MOM. SAMPSON IS SMART BOY.
Chapter 9: "You All Are Going To Get Yourself Killed."
The Call of the Streets: A Conversation with Doctor Rameck Hunt
hat I feel about this chapter is that they almost got themselves killed. They should stay away from bad people. They should not skip class.
E.C Z.M NOVEMBER20,2009
RAMECK SKIPED SCHOOL AND WENT WITH HIS BOYS.AND THEY WENT ON THE BUS AND THE DRIVER SAID YOU KIDS ARE GONNA GET YOUR SELFS KILLED.AND THE TOUGH KID WANTED TO FIGHT RAMECK AND HIS GANG AND RAMECK PUNCHED A BOY IN HIS FACE AND THE BOY FELL INTO THE POLE AND HIS TOOTH OUT HIS MOUTH
RAMECK SKIPPED SCHOOL AND WENT TO GO SEE HIS BOYS. THESE BOYS SAID SOMETHING TO RAMECK AND HIS BOYS. AFTER that Rameck SAID IF YOU SO TOUGH THEN COME out of the car. SO THE SIX BOYS CAME OUT OF THE CAR. THEN RAMECK'S BOYS STARTED FIGHTING WITH THE OTHER BOYS. RAMECK FOUGHT with a boy with no teeth in his mouth. SO the BOY WITH NO TEETH SWUNG AT RAMEK AND RAMECK DUCKED DOWN AND SWUNG BACK AT HIM. RAMECK TOOK A TOOTH OUT. THEN EVERYBODY RAN AND THE BOYS WENT BACK IN THEIRE CAR SO THEY COULD CHASE RAMECK AND HIS BOYS. RAMEK AND HIS BOYS WENT ON A BUS.
One time my brother did something bad and these boys were chasing after him. H
e was very scared so then he saw them again and then he ran as fast as he could to my house.
Chapter 10: "What's Up With That? You Think You Better Than Us?"
So Easy to Fall into the Drug Scene: A Conversation with Doctor Sampson Davis
ZM NOVEMBER 30,2009 CHAPTER 10
WHY WERE THEY RUNNING THE HALLS? PEOPLE KILL OTHER PEOPLE WHERE RAMECK IS. They are always fighting somebody. All they were thinking about was girls. They had guns. They were drinking when he was in high school. They had cocaine. Sampson got out of the car. ALSO, THE BOYS WERE TRYING TO GET ALL OF HIS MONEY. SAMPSON WAS NOT TRYING TO SELL DRUGS AND OTHER BAD THINGS.
11-30-09 E.C. (4)
I think that the person should not be looking at someone else’s report card unless you’re letting that person look at your report card if you want to let them. Well, if your card is good you can. Someone can tell what you got on your report card. There are people who do that.
All I think about this story is that Sampson should not respond to the other boy because the other boy asked to see his report card. I would have said, “No. It is none of your business,” because if he had all d’s on his report card then other boy might have just burst out laughing. If my mom asked me to go to college because I’m really smart I would say, “no,” too. I would say that because it might be harder work then all of the other work. So that’s why I would say, “no.” I think that I would think about it still, because I know I can do better in my work and I might change my mind.
I THINK SAMSON SHOULD NOT HANG OUT WITH OLDER KIDS NOT HIS AGE BECAUSE THEY WILL GET HIM INTO TROUBLE, AND GET HIM TO DO DRUGS. I WISH THAT DRUGS CAN JUST DRY UP AND GO AWAY.
This reminds me of me and my friend at my old school. My old friends and I did talk trash like them but we were playing with each other. When the man pulled out the gun, it reminded me of when some kids got shot at a corner and they were walking home. This was a little like when B.I.G the rapper was selling drugs and his friend was teaching how to sell drugs. I’m happy because Sampson didn’t help him to sell drugs.
K.B Chapter 10 11\30\09
What do you mean when you say the street ate him? How can it be the hottest one because there are a lot of skaking rink? If I was them I would run as fast as I can. They should not be doing drugs. They are not doing the right thing. I am happy he did not do drugs. I think he should think before he answers to anyone and alwa's try to not get in trouble.
B.D 11.30.09chapter 10
Chapter 11: "A Sticky Web of Bright Pink Silly String Across the Astonished Teacher's Face"
Foolishness and Understanding: A Conversation with Doctor Rameck Hunt
E.C. (5) December 1 2009 CHAPTER 11
BLACK HISTORY MONTH AT SCHOOL AND RAMEEK WOULD ALWAYS QUESTION. ALSO HE TRIED TO GET OTHER SCHOOLS TO WALK WITH THEM. THE KIDS SHOUTED OUT, “WE SHALL OVERCOME”. RAMECK WAS A HERO AND HE WAS EVEN ON THE NEWS.
Z.T CH11 12/1/09
I think that he shouldn’t have walked out the class because he can get in a lot of trouble. One time I walked out class and they called my mother and I never walked out the class again without permission because I learned my lesson.
B.D. chapter 11
There is nothing wrong with white people. You should not leave school. He should not be a follower and be a leader. You should follow your goal. I liked the part about pizza and blankets. You should listen to the teacher.
I THINK RAMECK SHOULD NOT TALK ABOUT BAD STUFF, LIKE ABOUT BLACK AND WHITE PEOPLE. I THINK RAMECK SHOULD NOT FOLLOW AFTER PEOPLE AND BE A LEADER. I ALSO THINK RAMECK AND SAMSON SHOULD NOT BULLY AT THEIR AGE. RAMECK SHOULD LISTEN AND LEAVE STUFF ALONE. I THINK RAMECK SHOULD LISTEN AND STOP DOING BAD THINGS OR HE WILL GET SUSPENDED. BUT NOW SINCE RAMECK SAID SORRY, THE TEACHER FORGAVE HIM AND SAVED HIM FROM GOING TO JAIL.
ZM DECEMBER 1, 2009 CHAPTER 11
RAMECK DID BAD THINGS IN SCHOOL. HE HAD A HISTORY BOOK AND HE SAID IT WAS ALL WHITE PEOPLE IN THE BOOK UNTIL HE SAW MARTIN LUTHER KING 300 PAGES LATER. THEY TRIED TO GET OTHER SCHOOLS TO WALK WITH THEM AND THEY WERE ONLY IN 10TH GRADE. RAMECK WAS EVERYONE’S HERO. HE WOULD DO EVERYTHING THE TEACHER TOLD HIM NOT TO DO. SHE DIDN’T LIKE HIM BECAUSE HE ALWAYS PUSHED HER BUTTONS. RAMECK ASKED QUESTIONS HE ALREADY NEW THE ANSWER TO JUST TO GET ON HER NERVES. ALSO HE GOT SUSPENDED FROM SCHOOL. ALSO RAMECK HAD TO GO TO COURT FOR WHAT HE DID. THE TEACHER’S FACE WAS SWOLLEN BECAUSE RAMECK SPRAYED SILLY STRING ON HER FACE. THE TEACHER LET RAMECK COME BACK TO SCHOOL AND LEARN.
December 1, 2009 C.T.
I THINK THAT THEY SHOULD NOT DO WHAT THEY ARE ABOUT TO DO. THEY SHOULD NOT MARCH IN THE STREETS. THEY CAN GO TO JAIL. RAMECK SHOULD NOT BE BAD AND SHOULD NOT IGNORE HIS TEACHER. WHAT RAMECK DID WAS CRAZY. HE COULD HAVE KILLED HIS TEACHER.
K.B chapter 11 12/1/09
I think he is using bad language. He should not be saying “white”. I think he’s doing a good thing trying to help black people get respect. I think they where doing a good thing because they should be fighting for respect. That was bad to put that stuff on the teacher’s face. Now people will laugh at her for the rest of her life.
Reactions to the 2006 documentary
I know that Sam's mother couldn't read. I never thought that Sam would be a doctor. I thought he would be the best person. I never thought that Rameck's father would steal and go into jail. Both of his parent were on drugs. His father died. I say George should be happy to have his parent. I think that it is good that they're trying to learn. I am happy for them. I know they had some ups and downs. I think he should get good advice. Sam was giving good advice. He is very successful. He's trying his best to stay strong. I can't believe they tried to rob a drug dealer.
Chapter 12: "I Think We Could All Do This--The Three Of Us--Together!"
The Beginning of the Pact: A Conversation with Doctor George Jenkins
E.C. (5) 1-4-10 CHAPTER 12 I THINK THAT THEY MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE TO GO TO COLLGE. DO YOU WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE AT MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY?
Chapter 13: "If He Dies, You Get Charged With Attempted Murder."
Thanksgiving in Jail: A Conversation with Doctor Rameck Hunt
E.C. (5) 1-8-10 THE CRACKHEAD WENT BEHIND THE DUPMSTER AND THEN RAMEEK AND HIS FRIENDS TRIED TO BEAT UP THE MAN THAT WAS SMOKING BEHIND THE DUMPSTER THEN THAT'S WHEN RAMEEK WENT INTO HIS BLACK COAT JACKET AND TOOK OUT A KNIFE FROM HIS POCKET.
Reactions to the 2006 documentary
V.F 4-22-10 George Rameck and Samson are going to a place to talk to kids. The boy’s sister has problems. She has to go to a school with people like her.

Chapter13 IF HE DIES,YOU GET CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER
I think that Rameck did the wrong thing by selling the man some drugs but I think that Rameck could have gotten away with it by telling the man not to smoke around him. I would of listen to his mother because she said not to hang out with those gang members but Rameck did not listen. I would of did the right thing.
